An author has released her sixth novel – the first one to be set in her hometown of Dagenham.
Elaine Spires has swapped the exotic settings of her previous books to recall the Heath Park Estate where she grew up.
The Banjo follows the lives of eight families living in a cul-de-sac on a fictional street from the time it was built in 1952 up until 1970.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed writing this book,” Elaine admitted. “I wallowed in nostalgia whilst doing so.
“So many memories of Dagenham are being lost and destroyed with the closing of so many pubs – for example the community spirit of ’50s and ’60s, so I wanted to write about what it used to be like.”
Elaine plans to write two more books set on the same estate, bringing the series up to the present day.
The Kindle version of The Banjo costs £2.99 and is out now. The novel will be available in paperback by the end of the year.
