History

Founded at the height of the flower power movement, the Isle of Wight Festival was first staged in 1968 and featured the likes of T. Rex, Bob Dylan, The Who and one of Jimi Hendrix’s final performances just weeks before his untimely death in 1970. The last of it’s original incarnation, the 1970 festival reportedly had an attendance of more than 600,000 people from all over the globe who completely took over the island, which at the time had a population of just 100,000. The festival returned in 2002, and every year since has featured a similar contingent of rock and pop stars over the summer weekend.

Who’s on?

Biffy Clyro, Calvin Harris, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Kings of Leon headline across the weekend.

What else is there?

As well as the cracking line up of music, there will also be world class football, as all the action from the World Cup will be screened live in the BT Sport Field of Dreams. Fans can catch every kick, card and corner during the festival on the big screen.

Getting there

A number of ferries for festival goers on foot or in a set of wheels run across the Solent that regularly depart from Lymington, Southampton and Portsmouth. Free shuttle services operating from the arrival points straight to the festival site. Packages are available for those travelling further afield, with Big Green Coach offering coaches to the Isle of Wight and back from a number of locations across the UK, including London Victoria. South West Trains operate services to Portsmouth Harbour, for the nearby Wightlink catamaran service, and to Southampton Central, where a free bus will take you the short journey to Red Funnel’s Red Jet and passenger/vehicle service.
