Recruitment for more than 700 jobs at the new Tesco warehouse will prioritise the 800 workers being made redundant at a Harlow depot, the company says.

The supermarket announced the fresh food distribution centre will open at Beam Reach, Dagenham – the redevelopment area on the north banks of the Thames – in June, creating an expected 756 new roles.

Tesco said the new distribution centre is a “significant investment in the local economy and will create hundreds of jobs for local people”.

However the company is also cutting more than 800 jobs through the closure of its distribution centre in Harlow.

A spokeswoman confirmed employees facing redundancy would be prioritised in recruitment for the new Dagenham centre, as well as for another new depot being opened in Reading in May.

She said: “It is difficult to judge how many would want to transfer to Dagenham. We will consider any other Tesco site where there are vacancies. There are lots of options nearby to Harlow over and above Dagenham.”
