The leader of the council and one of his deputies are in the running for a national award that recognises dedicated politicians.

Councillors Darren Rodwell has been shortlisted the ‘Leader of the Year’ category and Dominic Twomey is a finalist for the Finance and Transformation accolade at this year’s Councillor Achievement Awards.

Both councilors are the only London politicians to be shortlisted in their category.

Cllr Rodwell, who received a judges’ special mention at last year’s awards, said: “I am honoured to once again be in the running for this prestigious award and this nomination is a testament to our long-term vision for our borough.

“My goal as a councillor is the same today as it was when I first started almost a decade ago – to improve the lives of the people who live and work in Barking and Dagenham.”

Cllr Twomey added: “I am delighted to have been shortlisted for this top political honour and would like to thank all those who put my name forward.”

The awards will take place on November 6.
