Up to 200 frustrated residents packed a public meeting on Monday night to confront council bosses on fee-paying Controlled Parking Zones which could be introduced in their streets.

Motorists on Leftley Estate in Barking have threatened to boycott the new charges, which could see their annual parking fees rise by up to 100 per cent.

Barking and Dagenham Council deputy leader, Cllr Rocky Gill, said: “After listening to the concerns of the residents it was decided not to implement a controlled parking zone in Lyndhurst Gardens, Shirley Gardens and Hurstbourne Gardens from August 2012.

“A new consultation exercise for those roads will commence in January 2013 as agreed with residents.”

The meeting took place at Faircross community centre in Hurstbourne Gardens, Barking.

Tony Richards, 75, of Wilmington Gardens, Barking, said: “There were about 200 people there. It was a boisterous meeting.”
