Angry motorists are threatening to boycott “gas guzzler” parking charges being introduced by council chiefs in their streets.
The drivers on the Leftley Estate in Barking have pledged to ignore the council’s new controlled parking zones (CPZs), which they have branded “money making” and could net Barking and Dagenham Council thousands of pounds.
Households could see their parking fees increase by up to 100 per cent, while others who had not paid for parking last year could be liable to pay £100 for two medium-sized cars this year.
Motorists have been circulating petitions against the restrictions, which are based on CO2 emissions.
They claim that council chiefs have not properly consulted them on the introduction of the CO2 charges and the new CPZs.
Mum Anita Davis, 44, of Shirley Gardens, said: “The estate is in uproar and everyone has said they will not pay for the permits and they can take the whole estate to court.”
Ms Davis and her partner Sean Mooney, 44, did not pay parking charges last year but could be charged £100 for permits for their Ford Mondeo and their Fiat Punto because of plans to introduce a parking zone in their street.
Neighbour Stan Pennington, 69, of Lyndhurst Gardens, said: “We have been treated with contempt. There are four petitions going on the Leftley Estate.
“Nobody has been consulted about anything. It’s a money making scheme. It’s morally wrong.”
Another driver, Susan Byford, of Rainham Road South, Dagenham, paid £25 to park her Ford Fiesta last year but will have to fork out £40 under the new scheme.
Ms Byford, 44, said: “They’ve tried to bury it. I spoke to around 30 people at random and not one person knew about it.
“They didn’t inform us properly. We didn’t have a chance to complain.”
A council spokesman said: “Linking charges to CO2 emissions is a system that has been used in other London boroughs for several years.
“It is a way of encouraging and rewarding green vehicle ownership, and also easing congestion.
“Charges are reviewed and set annually as part of a wider budget setting process undertaken by members.”
