Firefighters were called in after an explosion at Barking Power Station last night.
Firefighters were called in after an explosion at Barking Power Station last night.
Sixteen staff were evacuated after an 11,000 volt transformer caught light at the station in Chequers Lane, Dagenham.
The explosion caused a slight light flicker in homes in Dagenham but there was no blackout as a backup transformer started automatically after 7.45pm.
The 20 or so firefighters stayed on site for more than an hour but a sprinkler system activated and put out most of the fire on the transformer, which is as big as a van. No one was injured.
Dagenham firefigher James Chapman said: “There was a light flicker for only a second.
“When we had the call there was an explosion at Barking Power Station, we knew something was going on.
“The premises were evacuated but everybody was accounted for.
“One of the transformers popped and there was a small fire.
“We were there for about one and a half hours. We had to wait for a site engineer to declare it safe.”
A London Fire Brigade spokesman said the 7.45pm blaze was under investigation.
An LFB spokesman added: “A volt transformer set alight, activated the sprinkler system.
“Sixteen people were evacuated before the arrival of the brigade.”
Firefighters used a stretcher to remove a woman from a Dagenham flat piled high with clutter during a seven-hour rescue operation.
