Barking regeneration project in design awards shortlist

»A housing regeneration project in Barking Town Centre has been short-listed for two prestigious design awards.

The first pase of the William Street Quarter

The first phase of William Street Quarter, a council and affordable home development on the former Linton estate, is up for an award in the London category of the Royal Institute of British Architects awards.

Also known as the Anne Mews Scheme, the first phase features 31 three and four bedroom council homes.

Designs for the second phase, 201 affordable housing units yet to be built, are in the running for an accolade in the Housing Design Awards 2012.

‘Leading-edge’

Meanwhile, images of two buildings in Barking Central, the Lemonade Building and a temporary spa called the Barking Bath House, which are due to be built next month, are set to feature in a major exhibition at the Aram Gallery in Covent Garden.

The exhibition will celebrate the Bauhaus Movement of architecture.

Cllr Cameron Geddes, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “Despite the tough economic circumstances, Barking Town Centre is very much on the up.

“The two-phase William Street Quarter projects are gaining more national recognition as leading-edge examples of good architecture which will deliver high-quality and much-needed homes for local people.

“We are equally proud as a council to learn that the Barking Bath House and the Lemonade Building are also receiving further recognition.”
