Blockbuster plans to build a film studio in the borough have taken a step forward after the council snapped up land for the site.

Nine acres of industrial land within the Londoneast-uk Business and Technical Park have been purchased from Sainsbury’s for £12m in order to secure space for the proposed studios – which would become the largest in the capital.

Cllr Darren Rodwell, leader of the council, said the development “makes sense”.

“We are already a prime film location, we’re affordable, have fantastic transport links to central London and investors know we’re an ambitious council determined to realise the benefits of the creative industries for our economy and residents,” he added.

Announcing the purchase during an assembly meeting in Barking town hall on Tuesday night, Cllr Cameron Geddes, cabinet member for economic and social development, thanked Sanofi staff for securing the deal.

A feasibility study is currently being commissioned to work out how to best maximise the social and economic benefits after Mayor of London Sadiq Khan announced the plans for the Rainham Road South site during a visit in October.

The council, Film London and London Local Enterprise Panel are all backing the proposal which is hoped will enable the borough to bid successfully for more overseas film productions.

The area has already enjoyed considerable success in attracting big budget films such as Marvel’s Avengers (Age of Ultron) and Dr Strange, plus TV dramas including Channel 4 sci-fi series Humans.
