Police uncovered the makeshift drugs farm at an address in Dunkeld Road, following reports of a strong smell of cannabis coming from the property.

A large quality of plants were found in the back garden and in a bedroom and the loft more were found growing under hydroponic lights with extractor fans in place.

A woman living at the address was later convicted of abstracting electricity to the value of £68.32 at the property, but the man named on the tenancy denied any knowledge of the plants in his home.

He tried to fight an eviction sought by Barking and Dagenham Council but a possession order was granted and he was evicted last week.

Councillor Margaret Mullane, cabinet member for enforcement and community safety, said: “Evicting this tenant, who showed no regard for anyone else, means the home can be offered to someone who really needs it.”
