With Christmas now a distant memory it might seem strange for Barking and Dagenham Council to be asking residents to look out for Santa’s sleigh - but that’s because someone stole it from a Dagenham lock-up.

The sleigh, which is used by the Reede Road Tenants and Residents Association at their annual Christmas party, was stolen from a garage off Hunters Hall Road.

It is believed that the trailer was stolen from the garage sometime between January 7 and January 12.

The adapted trailer, fitted with festive lights and speakers, is fitted with wheels and can be towed by a car.

Over Christmas it is wheeled through the streets of the borough so Santa can dish out presents to children and greet residents.

Cllr Darren Rodwell, leader of the council, has said he is “extremely disappointed” by the theft of the sleigh.

He said: “To hear that this much treasured trailer, which brings so much joy to the hearts of young people in the borough, has been stolen is very disheartening.

“I think it is safe to say that if you see Santa’s sleigh on the streets this January, it is not Father Christmas who is at the helm.

“However, let’s show that East End spirit of defiance. It might be January, but let’s keep the festive goodwill alive and help get Santa back on his sleigh in time for December.”

A number of other garages in the area were also broken into around the same time in what the council have described as a “spate” of thefts.

The council say they have reported the theft to the police and are working with them to “identify and prosecute” the perpetrators.

If you have any information about the whereabouts of the sleigh or you have any information about who stole the sleigh, contact the police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The Reede Road Tenants and Residents Association are looking to replace the sleigh in time for next Christmas so they can continue to hold their annual festive event.

If you want to donate materials or money to help replace the sleigh email Pam Barratt from the residents association on rrtra@hotmail.co.uk.
