Police carried out a controlled explosion after two World War II shells washed up at Dagenham Dock.
Officers were called to Breach Lane, behind Barking Power Station, at 10.43am yesterday following the discovery.
They put in place a 400 yard exclusion zone as a safety precaution and a number of surrounding buildings were evacuated.
Members of the Met Explosive Team then performed a controlled explosion and the area was declared safe and reopened at 12.20pm.
Teenagers were forced to flee from their beds after their family car erupted in flames which licked at the front of their home following a suspected arson attack.
