The Golden Fish chippy in Becontree Avenue, Dagenham, is aiming to retain the north London Best British Takeaway gong for a second year running.

A fish and chip shop is hoping to batter the competition by holding on to a prestigious accolade.

After scooping the north London gong for Best British Takeaway last year, Dagenham’s The Golden Fish has been shortlisted in the top ten.

Jason Aiken, manager of the Becontree Avenue chippy, says he hopes their success continues.

“We are one of the things in Dagenham which have remained unchanged for 50 years – apart from the prices,” the 47-year-old laughed.

“We are a bit of an institution. If we won the north London category we’d be very pleased, and if we won the whole thing I think we’d be ecstatic.”

The family-run takeaway will be up against fierce competition – including Caribbean, Thai and and Nepalese takeaways.

“We’ve only been entering these things for about three years,” added Jason.

“Hopefully this will be the icing on the cake.”

The five restaurants with the most votes will be invited to the Savoy hotel on December 5 for the regional winners to be revealed. One of the 13 will win Best British Takeaway in Britain and receive a cheque for £5,000.

To cast your vote go to by October 26.
