From police officers to members of the public, the courage and commitment of those keeping the peace in Barking and Dagenham was celebrated at an award ceremony yesterday (February 5).

Hundreds gathered at the East Area Command commendation award ceremony at the Jack Carter Pavilion, in Fencepiece Road, Barkingside.

Borough commander Det Chf Supt Jason Gwillim handed awards to winners from across Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge as their family members gave loud applause.

Welcoming guests, he said: “Today we are going to hear about some outstanding work, dedication to duty, going that extra mile and some inspiring examples of bravery by the police, support staff and members of the public.”

Over the course of the ceremony, feats of police bravery were read aloud by Supt Mark Long, Det Supt Jane Scotchbrook and Det Chf Insp Jamie Piscopo.

Supt Long shared one story in which members of the public intervened when seeing a group of men armed with metal bars attempt to burgle the neighbour across the road from their Dagenham home.

The suspects fled on a black moped when the father and son approached them and pursued them in their own vehicle.

They were later joined by six officers who were able to apprehend the suspect.

Pc Katie King was among those awarded for responding to the incident.

“It’s lovely to be recognised,” she said.

“But its important to remember everyone does this every day and they don’t always get recognition.”

Supt Long later shared another story in which two Pcs responded to a store robbery in Ilford, in which a 75-year-old man had been violently assaulted, in November 2016.

The three suspects took money from the shop till before fleeing the scene on a moped, down the High Road towards Romford.

Despite being outnumbered, the two police pursued and apprehended all three suspects, who resisted arrest.

They retrieved the stolen property and quantity of drugs.

Commenting on the event, partnerships sargeant Darren Heppel said: “It’s a good opportunity for families to understand we deal with on a day-to-day basis.

“It’s not always like on The Bill.”

Also in attendance were Redbridge Mayor Cllr Linda Huggett, Barking and Dagenham Mayor Cllr Abdul Aziz and Havering Mayor Cllr Linda Van den Hende.
