A talented student has moved one step closer to her dream of becoming a top fashion designer after winning a prestigious competition at London Fashion Week.
Sabine Bindere, 19, won the contest with a graffiti-print dress that she had designed during a summer school run by charity Fashion Awareness Direct (FAD).
Using the skills she learned there, the fashion design student secured the top spot in the 2011 Fashion Futures 2 competition, which was organised by FAD.
Her prize is a two-week work experience placement with George at ASDA where she will be working with their top designers helping to create their range of clothing.
Sabine, who attends Barking College, was one of 25 hopefuls who made their designs during the summer school and showed them at Vauxhall Fashion Scout on Tuesday, September 20, as part of London Fashion Week.
She said: “When they read out my name I couldn’t believe it. My legs we’re shaking and I couldn’t breathe.”
“I knew I had worked really hard but there was so much competition I really didn’t think I would win.
“As the runner-up names were read I did think, well that’s that then and I was a little disappointed, but then they called my name as the overall winner and I was so shocked.”
“I am very proud of myself but all the others should be too as all of the designs were fantastic, everyone was a winner.” she added.
The budding Vivienne Westwood described her winning outfit as “glamorous, sporty, very trendy and something like popstar Rhianna would wear”.
Her tutor at the college in Dagenham Road, Rush Green, Jo Price added: “When I saw Sabine’s dress coming down the runway I thought it looked brilliant and very professional. I am very proud of her.”
