Increase in Barking and Dagenham students going to university

More students from Barking and Dagenham are gaining places at university, latest council figures have revealed.

The number of young people from the borough’s schools and Barking and Dagenham College going into higher education increased 15 per cent in 2017 compared to the previous year.

A total of 817 students headed off to university last year, with 57pc choosing to stay within the M25, attending universities such as Queen Mary, Westminster and City.

The most popular destination was Kent University, with 47 pc choosing to study there.

In addition, five students secured Oxbridge places.

Cllr Evelyn Carpenter, cabinet member for educational attainment and school improvement, said: “It is fantastic to hear the young people of our borough are realising their potential and feeling confident to go to university.

“It is a credit to our schools and their staff for the work that they do in inspiring the young minds of today, to create a brighter tomorrow.”
