The birth of every baby is special - but for staff at the Barking Community Birthing Centre, little Sharleen Islam’s birth was even more special than usual.

The tot, who was born on Thursday weighing seven pounds, was the 1,000th to be born at the Upney Lane centre since it opened five years ago.

Proud parents Yeasmin Rahman and Samiul Islam, who also have a five-year-old daughter Sharleez, have taken her home to Stratford in time for Christmas.

Yeasmin said: “All of the staff and midwives are very friendly, and the centre is quiet and peaceful.

“I chose it as I wanted the birth to be as natural as possible. Having my own room was also lovely when my daughter Sharleez came to meet her sister.”

The birth centre, which is run by Barts Health NHS Trust, can be used by any woman providing they are in good health and have had a straightforward pregnancy.
