Historic pub The White Horse has poured its last pint and boarded up its windows after 400 years of serving drinks in Chadwell Heath.

Regulars are mourning the “heartbreaking” loss of an institution at the heart of the community and a petition calling for the building to remain as a pub currently has almost 300 signatures.

The Post appealed for punters to share their stories of the pub and was flooded with fantastic memories of first dates, first pints, raucous parties and leisurely lunches.

Punter Vic Godfrey-Bonnici said: “Our history in this area is slowly being erased. I’ve been a regular for years, have several friends who have worked there, I’ve performed there with my band and even met my husband in the pub.

“I would like the pub to remain as a drinking establishment so my husband and I can take out children in there one day to show them where mummy and daddy met, but sadly this won’t happen if it’s turned into houses.

“My husband even has the postcode on a necklace I bought him when we started going out. He wears it every day!”

Marianne Long, who has been going for decades, said: “My happiest memory is definitely the New Year’s parties. Everyone you knew used to be in there, drinking and dancing all night. You’d stagger home, get some sleep, then head straight back for a New Year’s Day roast!”

The pub is a former coach house and has been through many different owners, but Marianne claims it began to lose its charm in more recent times.

She said: “It was all going great until the latest round of owners took over. It stopped being as fun as it used to be and they didn’t take good enough care of it - you had to peel your feet off the floor when you were walking to the bar because it was so dirty.”

Drinkers have been complaining this latest closure leaves a lack of traditional pubs to choose from.

Page McQuillan said: “There’s just not enough choice round this area of places to go out anymore. I just think it’s so sad we have lost such a community asset and it would be fantastic if the building could stay as a pub.”
