A man has been arrested after throwing a knife out of a stolen vehicle while being chased by police.

Officers tried to stop the vehicle on the Heath Park estate in Dagenham at about 4pm yesterday but the driver sped off.

Pursued by tactical pursuit-trained drivers and a helicopter, he threw something out of his window which turned out to be a large knife.

The man eventually parked the vehicle, later found to be stolen, outside his home on the Heath Park estate.

He was arrested on suspicion of theft of motor vehicle, dangerous driving, failing to stop for police and possession of an offensive weapon.

He remains in custody as the investigation continues.
