In addition to the 18 million journeys, there were millions more trips made to Olympic road events and live sites across London as the capital was gripped by Olympic fever.

According to the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), 1.4 million people used the high-speed Javelin train services between St Pancras station in London and the Olympic Park in Stratford.

The figures also revealed a 47% increase in journeys made on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) during the Games, with almost six million journeys trips made in total.

The ODA invested £429 million to produce a legacy of improvements to the transport system, including £281 million for projects in the capital delivered by Transport for London.

ODA transport director Hugh Sumner announced this morning that public transport ‘delivered’ during the Games.
