Marks Gate street party to pay tribute to Ricky Hayden
18:30 21 September 2016
The community of Marks Gate will pay its respects to Ricky Hayden during a street party on Friday.
The 27-year-old was killed last week after he and his dad Paul, 46, confronted a gang attempting to steal a moped outside their home in Gibbfield Close, Chadwell Heath.
DIY Streets Marks Gate had planned to cancel the pre-arranged celebration in light of the tragedy, but organisers have now decided to provide a book of remembrance for visitors to sign and donations from stalls with go towards a funeral fund.
Rev Tim Brampton from St Mark’s Church will say a few words in memory of Ricky while Eastbury Concert Band will play a special rendition of Abide with Me.
“I was contacted by a number of organisations who wanted to go ahead with it because it will be a positive light in the middle of this tragic event,” said Louise Gold, project coordinator for Sustrans. “It also shows the strength of the community spirit in this area.
“A lot of people know the family and want to pay their respects.”
A pedal powered disco and party hat-making will also take place as part of the street party which will take place in Rose Lane and Tantony Green from 3pm to 6pm.
Apple juicing, a gardening workshop and cake decoration will also feature.
