Officers found eight asylum seeking children on a Dagenham industrial site.

The discovery was made last week after police were called to reports of trespassers in the Ivyhouse Road site.

They found eight 16 and 17-year-olds, who were arrested on suspicion of immigration offences.

The teenagers were transferred to Barking and Dagenham Council, who arranged temporary accommodation.

A council spokesman said: “We can confirm eight people were presented to us as unaccompanied asylum-seeking children.

“Temporary accommodation has been provided as part of our duties under Section 20 of the Children Act 1989 while we await the Home Office to carry out their assessments.”

Enquiries continue.
