Unsettled Arsenal striker Robin Van Persie wants to join Manchester United and not Premier League champions’ Manchester City, say sources.
Both clubs are in the race to sign up the 29-year-old, who has stated he does not want to sign a new deal to stay at the Emirates.
Yet Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has not abandoned hope of keeping Van Persie.
But he faces a huge challenge, with City in the market to make a signing.
Troublesome forward Carlos Tevez looks set to exit City to join AC Milan.
Meanwhile, efforts by United boss Sir Alex Ferguson to snatch Van Persie would be bolstered, if the Arsenal board resolve to sell the Dutchman for less than maximum value.
There is anger in the Emirates boardroom over comments made by him citing a lack of ambition at the club.
Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has played down suggestions he wants Rafael Benitez to be the club’s new head coach and claimed the delegation that visited England yesterday was hoping to secure an exchange deal with Manchester City for Edinson Cavani.
