Bacary Sagna was unhappy to see another tournament wasted for France
Arsenal star Bacary Sagna has blamed infighting as the reason why France failed to make it past the quarter final stage at Euro 2012.
The Frenchman, who did not travel to Euro 2012 after breaking his leg for Arsenal in May, was part of France’s disastrous 2010 World Cup squad that crashed out in the Group Stage after being blighted by a player’s strike when Nicolas Anelka was sent home.
Chelsea forward Florent Malouda revealed there had been a bust-up after the 2-0 defeat to Sweden and it has been reported that former Gunner Samir Nasri offered out a French journalist for a fight after the loss to Spain on Saturday.
“It’s a shame. We had the potential to go further,” said Sagna.
“People would take me for a madman for saying that, but I saw a team that could go to the final. I had faith in them.
“I was especially annoyed to hear the stories going around. That’s regrettable - in the end it gives a bad image of us, the team. It’s a waste of a competition. Everything was avoidable.
“It’s a shame that this never leaves the team alone.”
Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has played down suggestions he wants Rafael Benitez to be the club’s new head coach and claimed the delegation that visited England yesterday was hoping to secure an exchange deal with Manchester City for Edinson Cavani.
