Local athletes were out in force as the new Chingford League season got underway with an evening 5k run at the Redbridge Cycle Centre at Hog Hill.

The course included a steep hill, which had to be conquered four times, and Paul Grange (19.03) led Barking Road Runners home.

Diarmuid Mac Donnell (20.13) and Phil Ellul (20.27) were next to finish, ahead of Dagenham 88 Runners Peter Salmon (20.38).

Dagenham’s Hannah Sheikh (24.42) led the way for the local women, with Barking’s Charlotte Owen (25.17) not far behind.

The second of six fixtures is a cross-country race at Leyton’s Jubilee Park on October 20.

Both clubs were represented at the Harold Wood five-mile charity race, which raised money for the Alzheimer’s Society and Mind.

Nigel Swinburne led Daggers home in 31.37, with Hannah Sheikh (40.00) their first female.

Peter Salmon (33.36), Robert Newton (36.16), Michael Brown (37.26) and Gary Cardnell (39.09) also dipped below 40 minutes.

And the event also went towards the Dagenham club championships, with the next race being the Billericay 10k on November 4.

*Barking’s Paul Ward finished inside 90 minutes at the Cardiff half marathon, while Vicky Cooper was inside 96 minutes at Salisbury.

Dagenham’s Paul Prior (3:27.14) and Sara Prior (4:57.33) ran the Chester marathon, while Marios Pitsialis (4:29.58) completed the Chicago event with friend Gemma Wise.

Emma O’Shea (2:26.58), Bev Eagles (2:26.59), Lorraine Moore (2:28.58), Kay Sandford (2:42.57) and Jacqui Elliott (3:01.58) ran the Race for Life half marathon at Lee Valley, while Suzanne Easley returned to action at the Willow 5k, after having baby Chloe and clocked 35.23.

Cassie Bryant and Paul Suett completed the nine-mile Spartan Super event Windsor, including 23 obstacles.
