Women end Division One season in style

Barking Abbey’s women rounded out the Division One regular season in style with an 85-60 road win over Essex Blades at the University of Essex to finish in fourth place.

Theodora Armanu had the hot hand, knocking down seven three-pointers for her 25 points to lead the Abbey scoring, while Wura Ijelu put in an outstanding performance at point guard for 14 points and Taneka Rubin added 12.

Abbey pounced early, leading by 13 after the opening quarter, and despite Essex jumping right back into it in the second quarter as Harriet Welham helped them get to within two, the visitors regained their composure in the second half to produce the win.

“I am so proud of this group of players,” said Abbey head coach Karen Burton.

“Our aim for this team was to provide a platform for these players to develop and that’s exactly what they have done, they have gone from strength to strength as a team and as individuals.

“We knew Essex were big and our game has been transition and defensive pressure. We definitely did that during the game and despite the lapse in the second quarter we regained our composure and took control.

“With Teo having the hot hand this group is so unselfish and kept getting her the ball and that made an overall great team effort.”

Abbey will now have a one-week break before beginning the play-offs against Bristol Flyers.

*Academy player RJ Eytle-Rock had 28 points for partner club Kent Crusaders, who remain in the men’s Division Two play-off hunt after a win over Nottingham on Saturday.
