Essex lost out to Lancashire in the final of the Second XI T20 competition at rain-hit Arundel.

They beat Durham in their semi-final, which was reduced to five overs per side, as Sam Cook took 3-21 and Paul Walter smashed 37 off 12 balls to seal a 10-wicket win.

And they restricted Lancashire to 66-9 from nine overs in the final, with tall left-armer Walter taking 4-12 in his two overs.

But Lancashire defended their total, with left-arm spinner Tom Ormskirk taking 3-12, including the key wickets of Walter, Ashar Zaidi and Rishi Patel.

Hartley had taken two wickets in a single over in Lancashire’s semi-final win over Gloucestershire, while the Red Rose county also included first-team regulars Tom Bailey and Haseeb Hameed, who scored 10 off three balls in the semi-final – a four, a six and then out.
