After three away games in a row, the Eagles will look to impress against Somerset, Surrey and Glamorgan over the next week

Essex will look to get their Royal London One-Day Cup campaign back on track over the next week with three consecutive home fixtures.

The Eagles began the 50-over tournament with a six-wicket success at Middlesex, but have followed up that result with defeats away to Gloucestershire and Hampshire and will seek a response at home to Somerset tomorrow (Friday).

Assistant head coach Dimi Mascarenhas watched Essex lose by six wickets to his old side at the Ageas Bowl this Wednesday and is eager for a response.

The Eagles scored 303-6 at Hampshire with Adam Wheater (70), Tom Westley (66), Ravi Bopara (55) and Ashar Zaidi (57 not out) all passing fifty, but the hosts chased it down thanks to 111 from Rilee Rossouw.

Mascarenhas said: “It was a pretty tough day and we got beaten by a better team on the day, it’s as simple as that.

“It was a good wicket and from the start we got we were probably 30 short of what we could have got – although saying that we should have defended 303.

“Rilee Rossouw played a really nice knock and got 111 and that was the difference and everyone can bat around him. Our lads are in decent form but they need to kick on with the batting.”

Mascarenhas went on to praise the display of debutant Shane Snater, despite a tough introduction to list-A cricket with the Ilford bowler recording figures of 0-38 from 4.2 overs at the Ageas Bowl.

Anthony McGrath’s number two added: “It was pretty tough bowing up front to international class batsmen.

“On a flat wicket with the white ball it is hard work but I think he gave a good account of himself and I’m sure he will learn from it.”
