Dagenham Boxing Club’s Billy Adams flew out to Russia at the weekend to compete in the European Junior Championships.
It is the first time in club history that one of their juniors has qualified for the prestigious event, after Adams won back-to-back Nationals titles last season.
And junior captain Adams was due to compete in preliminary rounds yesterday (Tuesday), with the finals taking place next Tuesday (October 16).
Club secretary Dan O’Sullivan said: “Billy is the perfect role model for our younger boxers, who will be inspired by his achievements. We’re firmly behind Billy and know he has the ability and drive to medal.
“Everybody at the club, and all London clubs, wish Billy every success with this opportunity.”
The club experienced mixed fortunes in the Development Championships, as senior captain Martin Dimitrov was edged out in the Class B, 81kg group after a razor tight split decision.
Dimitrov went up against Callum Sandy (Hornets) at the Collingwood College, Camberley in a closely-fought affair, with the Dagenham boxer starting fast with quick combinations to edge the first round.
The second round saw the Hornets boxer come back into it and the third was even, with the judges split 3-2 in favour of Sandy.
Three other Dagenham boxers remain in the competition, with Akash Bhangal and Awais Khan in action in the quarter-finals at Basildon Sports Centre on Friday.
Bhangal meets Bailey Gibson (Chadwell St Mary ABC) in the 54kg group, while Khan meets Dylan Warner (New Saints ABC) at 48kg.
Meanwhile, Bailey Wallace will not box until the female Class B 52kg semi-finals on the weekend of October 21-22, when she faces Phoebe Griffiths (Southern Counties) in Swindon with a place in the final on offer.
The Daggers Boxing team are delivering two action-packed boxing shows in three weeks at The Roundhouse during October and November due to their ever-increasing squad of boxers.
The season opener is already fully matched with a Dagenham boxer in each and every bout on Friday October 19, with boxing starting at 7.30pm.
And on Friday November 9, the same plan will unfold with another selection of quality match-ups to enjoy.
