It was a clean sweep for Dagenham & Redbridge skipper Abu Ogogo at the end of season awards, held on the pitch after Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Northampton Town and he certainly hadn’t expected it before the start of the campaign.

The captain featured at both right back and in midfield last season, and in this current campaign, has led by example.

He has added nine goals having made the permanent switch into midfield this term – a tally which is only eclipsed by striker Rhys Murphy.

The 24-year-old picked up both the supporters’ and club Player of the Year awards, and the skipper could never have expected the season to go so well for him on individual note.

But he may not have played in the middle of the park had boss Wayne Burnett and coach Darren Currie had their way.

Ogogo badgered Burnett and Currie into giving him a chance in the middle of the park, and he has certainly repaid the faith.

“It is a proud moment, obviously I just tried to do the best I could each and every game so I am pleased my performances have been appreciated by everyone,” said Ogogo.

“I never really expected it, I just wanted to play as many games as I could and get as many goals as I could and see where it would take me.

“I was in their ear for ages telling them to play me in there and they said when I get my opportunity I have got to take it with both hands and I think I have done that.”

And Currie had no qualms with the double success for the club skipper , adding: “Abs has thoroughly deserved that. He’s been fantastic.

“I go back to when we were sitting in the office in pre-season and he was asking for the number eight shirt and telling us: ‘I can play midfield.’ We were a bit ‘you’ve been playing well at right back.’ Fair play to him he’s gone in there and he’s been fantastic this year. There’s no better winner for me.”

Ogogo beat defender Scott Doe to the club award, who finished in second, and Medy Elito was third.

In the supporters’ award, the former Arsenal youngster came out on top, beating Elito and Brian Saah to the crown.

Left back Jack Connors picked up supporter Young Player of the Year award, and the Community Player of the Year went to goalkeeper Jordan Seabright. Jon Nouble was announced as the Academy Player of the Year.
