Having bowed out of the Velocity Trophy in midweek following a penalty shoot-out defeat against Brentwood, the Blues were behind after just five minutes.

The visitors produced some patient build-up play on the right and, after an initial shot was blocked, a cross picked out Shane Cojocarel at close range for a header past Emmanuel Olajide.

Maldon had three players booked, while Joe Bruce was also shown a yellow card, before Blues boss Justin Gardner sent on debutant Emmanuel Ighorae for Rashid Kamara.

But the home side fell further behind just before the hour mark when George Sykes doubled Maldon’s lead with his first goal for the club.

Gardner sent on Ola Ogunwamide and Jack McQueen, for Larry Akanbi and Daniel Cheema respectively, and saw his side halve the deficit almost immediately to give themselves hope.

McQueen was the scorer, meeting an inswinging corner from the right with a downward header and claiming his first goal for the club in only his third appearance, but it proved only a consolation as the Jammers held on for the points.

Ricky Tarbard, Darelle Russell and Brendan Ocran all had their names taken in th closing stages as Barking’s frustrations grew.

And a fourth league defeat in six matches this season left Blues in 12th place ahead of Tuesday’s home match against Tilbury, who have taken just two points from five games to date.
