Portsmouth scored twice in the second half to consign Daggers to a third consecutive defeat in League Two and leave them 19th in the table with seven points from eight games.

James Dunne gave Pompey a first-half lead before they added two more in the second period, through a Jed Wallace penalty and an Andy Barcham tap-in to defeat Wayne Burnett’s men.

Andre Boucaud was also shown a red card for picking up two yellows to add insult to injury for the Victoria Road side.

Daggers boss Burnett made three changes to the side defeated by Cambridge United at the weekend and unsurprisingly goalkeeper Mark Cousins came in for his debut, following Liam O’Brien’s poor performance on Saturday.

Damian Batt and George Porter were also handed starts, in place of Ian Gayle and Ashley Hemmings.

In a quiet opening ten minutes, it was the hosts who came closest to creating a goalscoring opportunity, but Wallace failed to collect Patrick Agyemang’s pass.

Porter linked well with Jamie Cureton just past the quarter-hour mark, but captain Abu Ogogo was quickly pressurised and couldn’t get a shot off.

Ogogo’s midfield partner Boucaud went into the book shortly afterwards for a late challenge before Luke Howell came close to scoring for the second consecutive match.

The midfielder let fly from 25 yards but Portsmouth goalie Paul Jones pushed his effort clear before Wallace responded for the hosts with a long-range strike, which failed to test Cousins.

Howell, full of confidence following his goal against Cambridge, continued to pose a threat and let fly again from outside the box, but this time fired wide.

Brian Saah nearly scored a comical own goal six minutes before the interval, though fortunately Cousins was able to save, but a minute later and the debutant was picking the ball out of his net.

Agyemang teed up Dunne, who smashed his shot into the top corner from inside the box to give Pompey the lead.

Wallace tested Cousins a minute before the break before Daggers came so close to levelling through Ashley Chambers.

The winger unleashed a long-range thunderbolt, but it smashed against the crossbar and the half-time whistle soon followed.

Burnett’s side started the second period with greater urgency and Ogogo tested Jones before Cureton fired over the bar.

Unfortunately for Daggers, 17 minutes into the second half, Boucard received his marching orders after picking up a second yellow for catching Agyemang late.

Daggers conceded a penalty seven minutes after the dismissal, when Matt Partridge pulled down Paul Robinson inside the box.

Wallace converted the spot-kick, sending Cousins the wrong way, to put Pompey firmly in the driving seat.

And Daggers had a let-off soon after when home substitute Miles Storey found the net, but saw his ruled out for offside.

Another Portsmouth replacement, Barcham, did add a third deep into injury time however when he converted Wallace’s cross from close range to continue Dagenham’s sorry September run of three games and three defeats.
