Daggers boss discusses return of Welsh forward and praises Jamie Cureton
Dagenham & Redbridge boss Wayne Burnett is pleased to have Christian Doidge back and up to speed, but admits it will be hard for the Welsh forward to get into the starting team at the moment.
The 22-year-old has endured a frustrating campaign since signing from Carmarthen Town in August.
Injuries have restricted him to just seven appearances for the Victoria Road outfit, but he has managed to find the net.
Doidge scored during the 3-1 defeat to Luton back in October, but has recently been playing for Conference Premier Dartford to boost his match fitness.
He featured nine times for Darts during his two-month spell at Princes Park and Daggers boss believes he will provide more competition up front.
Burnett said: “Christian is back now and he has got some game time. His fitness will be up and his intensity will be up.
“He will come into contention for a place against Stevenage. Will he get in the starting 11? At the moment probably not.
“Will he get in the starting 18? Maybe, we will have to wait and see. But it is good to have him back because it is competition for places.”
Daggers main man this campaign Jamie Cureton took his goal tally for the club up to 15 on Tuesday night when he lobbed over away keeper Luke McCormick to seal a 2-0 win against Plymouth Argyle.
The experienced hitman continues to shine and has proved to be an outstanding signing.
He has played 39 times this year, three more than he managed for Cheltenham Town during the whole of last season, to show age is no barrier.
Cureton’s goal on Tuesday was the 273rd of his career and he is keen to continue.
“I have spoken about Cureton on many occasions about how well he has done and I can’t speak highly enough of him,” said Burnett.
“He has been brilliant, but we have managed him well and he will tell you that.
“Against Plymouth he has scored another goal. He is looking to get 300 and hopefully if he can continue his form he will get to that mark.”
