Daggers boss won’t be friends with Leyton Orient caretaker this evening in Johnstone’s Paint Trophy clash at Victoria Road

Dagenham & Redbridge boss Wayne Burnett is good friends with Leyton Orient caretaker manager Kevin Nugent but won’t be this evening when the pair go head to head in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Victoria Road.

Burnett and Nugent both started their career with the O’s and played with each other during the early 90’s at Brisbane Road.

The Daggers boss was also Nugent’s predecessor as Orient youth team manager in 2009 but only remained with the east Londoners for a short time before moving to Victoria Road as assistant manager.

Burnett hopes his friend is given the Leyton Orient job on a permanent basis but won’t be doing him any favours this evening.

He said: “Kevin is a good friend of mine but he won’t be tonight!

“I am really pleased that he is hopefully going to get the job and get an opportunity to manager Leyton Orient because it is a fantastic club.

“I would love to see him do well and I have known him for many years.

“He is a real footballing person and I wish him well, not tonight, but I wish him well.”

Although uncertainty surrounds the League One outfit, Burnett is well aware of the task facing his team.

Daggers boss is expecting a difficult game but wants his side to show some character after defeat in their last outing at Victoria Road on Friday night to Exeter.

“We have got to play Leyton Orient, who are a good team,” said Burnett.

“They have lost their manager (Russell Slade) recently but we are under no illusions about how difficult the game will be.

“The wonderful thing about this beautiful game that we are in is that you have always got an opportunity to rectify what has gone on previously. We can do that (against Orient).”

Burnett could make changes for this evening’s clash but he insists whatever team he picks will be doing everything they can to knock the O’s out.

Daggers boss said: “Every game we play we want to win.

“It will be a good game and we will be as strong as we possibly can be because we want to progress further in the competition.”
