Victoria Road manager discusses this weekend’s clash at Newport and how people from the outside view the club

Ahead of Dagenham & Redbridge’s trip to play-off hopefuls Newport County, manager Wayne Burnett has revealed he aspires to get the club promoted.

The 43-year-old, who has been in charge for two years, is currently in negotiations about extending his stay at Victoria Road.

Daggers go to Wales this weekend to face an Exiles team hoping to squeeze into the top seven, but Burnett has ambitions of his own regarding getting his club into League One.

“Each year we are favourites to go down, but we are changing people’s views on Dagenham,” said Burnett.

“Everyone expects to beat us, but we don’t mind that because it creates a siege mentality.

“We just want to try and win as many games as possible each season, but if we can go beyond that and get promoted, and be a League One team again, that would be great and that is what we are all aspiring to.”

The immediate focus for Burnett and his players is Saturday’s trip to Rodney Parade and they will take solace from the fact Newport have struggled at home since Jimmy Dack took over from previous boss Justin Edinburgh.

Dack became caretaker on February 7 before he was appointed manager on February 21 until the end of the season.

Although he has struggled at home, winning just one of his seven matches at Rodney Parade, Newport have achieved some creditable results on their travels since he took over.

Exiles have registered victories at Wycombe Wanderers and Burton Albion under Dack’s stewardship and Burnett praised his opposite number.

“He has done a brilliant job,” said the Daggers boss. “I know Jimmy very well, I have for a long time, and I am pleased with how things have gone for him since Justin left.

“I’m pleased the players are playing for him. They have a good opportunity to get into the play-offs, but not only that, but to earn promotion.

“Newport have got passionate fans, I don’t know what their infrastructure is like so I can’t comment on that. But they did very well last season and they are doing well again.”
