Dagenham & Redbridge boss Wayne Burnett was left frustrated with his side after they were knocked out of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at home to Oxford United.

Both League Two teams made changes for the southern section quarter-final fixture at Victoria Road.

The hosts were looking to win for the first time since October 7, but made the worst possible start as Pat Hoban put the Yellows ahead after 27 seconds.

Burnett’s men looked to respond, however, and after failing to take some of the opportunities they created came in 1-0 down at the break.

Unfortunately a goal from Alex MacDonald in the 47th minute virtually put the tie to bed as Daggers lost again at home.

“I gave people an opportunity for whatever reason whether it is because people are on international duty or because they deserve it and they didn’t really come up with the goods,” said Burnett.

“There were probably only two players that could come out with any credit and no more than that.

“When you only have two players playing okay it is difficult to win a football match.

“Were Oxford that much better than us? It is debatable but they have scored two goals so they are because we haven’t scored any.”

Although the likes of Jake Mulraney and Jamie Cureton were introduced, Daggers just couldn’t find a way back into the contest.

Burnett admits his players just aren’t doing enough and revealed one of his senior professionals said after the match that they are all letting the boss down.

“We have been on the training ground and I think we have got to work. We need to do more because at the moment we are conceding ridiculous goals,” said the Victoria Road manager.

“I don’t know how some of the goals we concede happen, I can’t get my head round it at times. A lack of concentration, a lack of focus or poor technique and it seems when we make a mistake we are punished for it.

“But let’s not take anything away we are bottom of the league for a reason and we have to get better. We need to improve all around the park.

“I stood in the changing room after the Oxford match and spoke to the players and one of the senior guys has said it is not acceptable - we are letting you down.

“They are letting me down. We are working as hard as we possibly can. We are on the training ground non-stop working defensively, but sometimes I can’t legislate for errors and I am disappointed.”
