Fan favourite Rhys Murphy departs to join Oldham Athletic
Dagenham & Redbridge boss Wayne Burnett has revealed he tried to bring Daniel Carr to the club when he was thriving in the non-league scene for Dulwich Hamlet.
The 21-year-old made a name for himself by scoring plenty of goals in the Ryman One North during the 2012/13 campaign.
His form in the lower echelons of English football earned him a move to Championship outfit Huddersfield Town, but Burnett has revealed he was interested in the youngster at the time.
“We have kept an eye on him. We knew him from his Dulwich days when he was scoring goals,” he said.
“We tried to get him in to have a closer look at him, but he had bigger fish to fry.
“He got a big move to a Championship club and he has had trials at Liverpool so he is someone we have known for a long time and being a London boy. We hope he can come here and help us.”
Burnett also revealed Carr was very enthusiastic about joining the club and making the most of his opportunity until the end of the season.
The forward spent time with Fleetwood Town last year and was with Mansfield Town earlier this campaign.
And Daggers boss is hoping he can make a positive impression, adding: “Whenever you bring a player in the most important thing is to make sure they want to come.
“Daniel was very keen. He said ‘I want to come and be a part of what you are trying to do’. That is important and if he can help then fantastic.”
Carr’s addition came hours before Rhys Murphy’s departure to Oldham Athletic was confirmed late on transfer deadline day.
The forward has signed a two and a half year deal with the League One outfit and leaves Daggers after scoring 14 times for the club.
Burnett added: “I didn’t want to lose him. We don’t want to lose our best players, but he has gone so we have to march on.
“We actually turned down a bid from Barnsley last summer when he was injured, which shows you the calibre of player. He has come back and played a handful of games and he is in demand again.”
