Daggers manager thanked Steve Thompson MBE for his support
Dagenham & Redbridge boss Wayne Burnett has praised the work of managing director Steve Thompson MBE and insisted without him, the club wouldn’t be in such a good position.
A poor run of results has placed Daggers 21st in the League Two table and close to the relegation places.
But the Victoria Road manager has only received support from his managing director and the club, and speaking after the victory against Carlisle United last weekend, he thanked Thompson.
He also pointed out that continuity works in football and revealed how much he loves working at Daggers.
“Our managing Director Steve Thompson is absolutely brilliant and he has been so supportive of me,” said Burnett.
“He has done everything in his power to give me the very best opportunity and I can’t thank him enough.
“This club is incredibly fortunate to have someone like him and he has been really supportive.
“We have some fantastic people at this club. We have real people who have a real passion for this club.
“The board have been supportive over the years and I think you look at the people that got new managers in the Premier League last year and I think predominantly most went down, so I think continuity works.
“And I love it here and I love what we have created, not just me but everyone.
“Steve, Darren Currie, Warren Hackett, the physios, the medical team and that is just the technical side and then you have got the people that work around the club tirelessly.”
Burnett went on to discuss how fortunate Daggers are to have a managing director like Thompson MBE.
He also discussed what his remit was for this season when he spoke with the board during the summer.
“Steve works unbelievably hard at this club and if he wasn’t here this club would be in a very different position,” insisted Burnett.
“People don’t realise how hard and how well that man works for this club but not just him
“You have the likes of Chris Pollard behind the bar and other people that work tirelessly and so do my staff and so do my players and righty so.
“We are in an excellent and fantastic position that people would love to be in so we are under no illusions about how fortunate we are.”
Burnett added: “I had a board meeting in July with all the board members and I asked them as a group what their expectations were and everyone said we need to remain in the football league.
“My remit was to stay in the football league. At the moment I am doing that and since I have been here have we ever been in the bottom two? No and we have played some ok football at times.
“The board said stay in the league, but do they want to just stay in the league? Of course they don’t.
“They want to be as high as we possibly can and they want a cup run.
“Do you not think we want a cup run, the players? We are all in this together.
“I am a little bit frustrated, like the fans are, and I can understand their anger and frustration.
“But we are working hard to try and be successful because we all want to be successful.
“We want this club to be successful and we want everyone to be a part of what we do and what we are trying to do.”
