Daggers boss reflects on stalemate, the debut of Jodi Jones and Ayo Obileye’s loan

Dagenham & Redbridge boss Wayne Burnett praised the performance of Andre Boucaud following yesterday’s stalemate with Portsmouth.

The game started at a frantic pace, but neither team was able to create a significant opening at Victoria Road and they settled for a share of the spoils.

Burnett was happy with the display of his team and in particular the Trinidad and Tobago international.

He said: “We tried to make it three wins from three and I think we have put in a really good performance against a good Portsmouth team.

“Forget their run of results they have got some good players. They have some very good players and I thought we had very good performances from everyone.

“I thought Andre was absolutely brilliant and he was my man of the match. I thought he controlled the game and worked incredibly hard. He was excellent.”

Burnett also handed a debut to 17-year-old Jodi Jones deep into stoppage time at Victoria Road making the youth team player the youngster footballer to represent Daggers in the Football League.

Jones has impressed in the Essex Senior Cup this season – scoring two outstanding goals against Waltham Abbey and Concord Rangers respectively.

“The kid has got talent and ability. He has deserved a place on the bench and he got on against Portsmouth and we are not just putting him on to appease anyone,” Burnett insisted.

“We are putting him on because we think he can make a contribution. He has played in development games and he has done very well.

“He travelled up to York on Saturday and we didn’t think the game was appropriate for him. We thought it would be a physical game so he missed out, but it was an experience.

“He was back on the bench against Portsmouth and got an opportunity. It was a little bit late, but it is something he will cherish. It is his debut and hopefully we will see much more of him.”

Ayo Obileye was excellent in defence again for Daggers and Burnett also revealed his delight at extending his loan from Charlton Athletic until the end of the season.

He added: “I am really pleased to extend Ayo’s deal. Charlton, again, have helped us massively. We have got him until the end of the season hopefully, unless they call him back, because they can call him back, but we are hoping they don’t.

“Ayo and Scott Doe look like a decent partnership at the moment and we are not conceding goals.”
