Victoria Road manager discusses dealing on the final day of the transfer window

Dagenham & Redbridge boss Wayne Burnett admitted he was disappointed to see Rhys Murphy leave the club on the final day of the transfer window, but is hopeful Daniel Carr can score plenty of goals after joining on loan from Huddersfield Town.

On a busy Monday night at Victoria Road, Alex Jakubiak’s loan from Watford was extended until the end of the season and Carr joined on a similar deal from Championship side Huddersfield.

Murphy’s exit to League One outfit Oldham Athletic for an undisclosed fee was confirmed in the early hours of Tuesday and Burnett said: “Obviously it was disappointing to lose Murphs.

“We spoke about it on Tuesday as a group and the players are really pleased for him, but we don’t want to lose our best players.

“Not only was he a good player and a good goalscorer, but he was very popular within the group.

“But Watford have helped us out again and we have brought in Daniel Carr from Huddersfield Town.

“Alex Jakubiak did very well against Cheltenham and people forget he is still only 18.

“He is still a very young man and is going to be inconsistent at times, but he has done okay since joining us.”

Carr, who joined Huddersfield in April 2013 from non-league Dulwich Hamlet, has been linked with Premier League giants Chelsea and Liverpool in the past and Burnett is excited to be working with him.

He added: “Daniel is six foot tall and has good attributes. He is a goalscorer. The ball tends to find him and drop to him in the box so hopefully he can score some goals.

“He will run in behind and has got a bit of everything.”

Both Jakubiak and Carr will be vying for a place against York City this weekend and when Daggers host Portsmouth at Victoria Road on Tuesday.

And Burnett wants another win when they travel to Bootham Crescent on Saturday.

He addedL “We are expecting a tough match. York have done okay at home, but we have done okay away so it should be an interesting game. It would be nice to get back-to-back wins.”

Portsmouth comfortably defeated Daggers 3-0 back in September and Burnett would like his team to set the record straight in the return.

“I know Andy Awford well and the expectation is incredibly high,” added Burnett.

“But no one that has been in a higher league are entitled to anything. No one is going to give anything in this league.

“We played them earlier in the season and they beat us quite comfortably. We had a man sent off, but hopefully we can return that on Tuesday.”
