Dagenham & Redbridge assistant manager Warren Hackett was pleased their efforts on the training ground started to show off as they earned a point in a 1-1 draw at Cambridge United on Tuesday.

Ashley Hemmings’ second-half header cancelled out Cameron McGeehan’s 23rd-minute opener as it ended all square at the Abbey Stadium.

Daggers were able to achieve something Manchester United couldn’t against U’s in the FA Cup by scoring, but their goal was just their second in the league since November 29.

However their attacking play was much better on Tuesday and there were positive signs ahead of Cheltenham Town’s visit to Victoria Road for a crucial clash on Saturday.

“We want to win every match, but realistically coming to Cambridge and getting a draw was a positive result,” said Hackett.

“We have been working defensively, which is obviously why we have conceded less of late, and we have also been working on final third stuff because we haven’t been scoring many.

“But our movement was great at times and with a bit more fortune we could have got another one or two.

“I would like to move on from this point now. It is another benchmark we have laid down.”

The point at the Abbey Stadium was enough to take Burnett’s team out of the bottom two.

It also went some way to show their poor performance at Northampton was a blip in an encouraging run of form, which has seen them lose just once in five matches.

Prior to visiting Cambridge, Daggers had only scored once in seven league matches, but Hemmings’ header improved that record and Hackett was impressed with the attacking players in the side.

“They are not the biggest in stature, but their movement is fantastic,” added Hackett on forwards Jamie Cureton and Rhys Murphy.

“Rhys has been out for a long time and he is just getting back into the groove now.

“Some of their link-up play at Cambridge was fantastic and I am sure the more they play together the better they will become.

“Don’t be fooled by Ash’s height. He has got a great leap and he gets up higher than most. It was a great goal and a great ball by Andre Boucaud.”
