Daggers boss reflects on 3-1 defeat to Luton Town

Dagenham & Redbridge manager Wayne Burnett was frustrated that a poor end to the first half cost his team against Luton Town.

After more than matching the Hatters for the first 42 minutes, Mark Cullen scored twice during the final three minutes of the half to ruin the good work put in beforehand by Daggers.

The cross for Cullen’s first could have been cut out, whilst the high line the visitors defence tried to play for the second was suicidal.

It meant Burnett was left to reflect on more individual errors costing his team, although he did insist he takes full responsibility for the result.

He added: “For 40 minutes of the first half I think we probably have more shots on target and we weren’t really in that much danger.

“We have caused our own problems again. We have tried to play offside when we are not in a good defensive line and they have broke the offside trap and it is a good finish.

“We are making mistakes and individual errors and it is costing us.

“But I am responsible for that and there is not a great deal I can say if I am honest. I am the manager and the buck stops with me.”

Burnett handed starting roles to Billy Bingham and Matt Partridge against Luton and praised the performance of the duo, who lined up in central midfield alongside Andre Boucaud.

He also commented on Christian Doidge’s first goal for the club late on at Kenilworth Road.

“I thought Matt and Billy played really well and they did well and worked incredibly hard,” added Burnett.

“I thought Billy Bingham worked his socks off and put some tackles in and got forward.

“I just think collectively we need to do better as a group and as a team because it is individual errors again.

“Of course it is nice for Christian and he will remember that goal for the rest of his life and good for him but it was too little too late.”
