Dagenham & Redbridge boss Wayne Burnett admits he needs more fighters in his team after watching their run without a win extend this week.

After a spirited display in the first round of the FA Cup against Morecambe earned a goalless draw, they disappointed when League Two rivals Oxford visited in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on Wednesday.

A goal inside the first 27 seconds put the Yellows ahead, before they added a second just over a minute into the second half to secure a 2-0 victory and a place in the area semi-finals.

Burnett has only seen his team win one of their last 13 matches and admits they need more. He said: “When you are not winning games it can affect your confidence a little bit and that is when you need men.

“You need people to roll their sleeves up and say ‘okay we know we are in a dog fight’ and I have got one of the players, that is on-loan to us, fighting and digging people out.

“He isn’t really our player if I am being honest, but he was driving the team forward and we need more of that.

“We need 20 players that are going to fight and that is what we need right now – fighters. At the moment we haven’t got enough of them.”

The player Burnett is believed to be talking about is James Dunne.

The Portsmouth ace, alongside captain for the night Joss Labadie, was trying to get Daggers playing and back in the game on Wednesday, but they struggled to break down a well-drilled Oxford side.

Burnett made six changes from the team that played out the 0-0 draw with Morecambe on Saturday.

Justin Hoyte and Jack Connors were away on international duty, while Peterborough forward Kyle Vassell was cup-tied.

Nyron Nosworthy, Jake Mulraney and Jamie Cureton dropped out of the starting line-up as well, with Josh Passley, Josh Pask and Joe Widdowson going into the back four.

Ashley Chambers, Christian Doidge and Matt McClure were selected to try and end Daggers’ goal drought in front of their own fans.

Burnett added: “You look at the team we put out and it is a decent enough side and one I would think is more than capable of winning.

“However, if you give goals away you have no chance. You haven’t got any chance, because goals change games and Oxford got a lift.

“There wasn’t much in the first half and second half they came out and scored again. It is almost game over at that point. We huffed and puffed and tried, but it wasn’t quite good enough, to be honest.”
