Daggers boss admitted they are rushing Rhys Murphy back too quickly after he played the whole second half in the FA Cup tie

Dagenham & Redbridge manager Wayne Burnett was disappointed with the quality his team showed in the final third in their 0-0 draw with Southport in the first round of the FA Cup.

The Victoria Road outfit failed to get a much needed home win against the Conference Premier team, despite getting into decent positions throughout the tie.

Daggers boss didn’t think his team showed signs of nerves but that his key players couldn’t show the quality they usually do in attacking areas.

“People would be expecting us to be beating Southport and I think we have had 15 shots at their goal and have not managed to score any of them,” said Burnett.

“We just lacked a little bit of quality in front of goal. Key players, that you can usually rely on, just rushed it and it didn’t quite work out how we thought it would.

“There was no fluidity or fluency about our game and it took a while but once we started moving the ball a bit quicker in the second half, we got into better positions but once we got into those positions we didn’t really capitalise.”

Burnett admitted they are maybe rushing forward Rhys Murphy back too quickly from injury after he was introduced at half time.

Murphy made a difference and provided good support for Jamie Cureton up front but Daggers couldn’t find the all important opening goal.

“When you haven’t won games at home for a long period of time sometimes you can feel a little bit nervous but I don’t feel that was the case,” said the Victoria Road manager.

“I thought the back four did reasonably well and the midfield were ok I just felt we lacked a little bit of cutting edge at times when we got into decent positions.

“I think we lacked a little bit of quality, certainly around their box and in the final third.

“We put Murphy on because we thought Jamie needed a little bit of help and we changed it around slightly.

“We are probably rushing Murphy back quicker than we should be really, he is probably not up to speed yet.

“But he has got 45 minutes and more minutes under his belt is a positive but he is such a valuable player that we want him on the pitch but we probably pushed him a little too early today.”
