Daggers midfielder admits team struggled in defeat at U’s

Ashley Chambers says Dagenham & Redbridge did not play to the level expected on of them on Tuesday after the League Two strugglers crashed to a 4-0 defeat at Oxford United.

Daggers were undone by a brilliant display from Kemar Roofe, who scored a hat-trick, while Alex McDonald also scored for the hosts on a bad night in Oxfordshire for the east Londoners.

The result leaves the Victoria Road club firmly stuck to the bottom of League Two and while Chambers acknowlegded the U’s are a good team, he admitted Daggers struggled to get going.

“It was very disappointing, we didn’t give a great account of ourselves, but all credit to Oxford who are a fantastic side,” said the forward.

“They’re pushing for promotion and I can’t see them being too far away from doing that, but we didn’t stamp our authority on the game at all.”

At times, Daggers looked unable to cope at the Kassam Stadium with Oxford having 22 shots throughout the 90 minutes, 11 of which were on target.

With statistics like those, it was no surprise that Liam O’Brien was the most active player for the visitors as he produced a string of good saves to deny the hosts from running up an even bigger score.

The keeper was often left exposed as Daggers were hit on the break by an Oxford side who looked to move the ball into attacking areas as quickly as possible with neat flicks and through balls.

And Chambers revealed that it can be difficult to play against a team with that style of play, especially away from home.

“Oxford play at a great tempo and try to hit you on the counter attack with quick sharp, passing and everyone moving, so it was very difficult to contain them,” added the 26-year-old.
