Chelsea chairman warns Daggers they can’t reach Premier League

Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck has joked Dagenham & Redbridge will never find a Roman Abramovich of their own because UEFA’s Financial Fair Play Regulations wouldn’t allow it.

The 68-year-old was speaking to the London Evening Standard about various topics recently and discussed FFP.

He insisted teams can’t have sugar daddies in the current era so if Daggers wanted to earn promotion through the divisions into the Premier League before challenging for Europe they will have to do it without an Abramovich figurehead backing the club.

“It would be hard to do today what Mr Abramovich has done because of Financial Fair Play,” Buck told London Evening Standard.

“The FFP model that exists is not the best model. Chelsea believe in financial stability and in suitable laws and investment.

“But FFP preserves the status quo; you can’t buy a club and invest in new players.

“If you’re in Dagenham and Redbridge, you still go home at night and say: ‘Some day I’ll be in the Premier League.’

“Well, in Dagenham, you can still dream of the Premier League… but you won’t get there.”

Although Daggers supporters won’t be dreaming of the club competing in the Premier League soon, they have a relegation battle in League Two to concentrate on. They can take solace from the fact they helped Dwight Gayle reach the echelons of English football.

Gayle, who played for the Victoria Road outfit in the first part of the 2012/13 campaign scoring seven goals in 19 appearances, has been impressive for Crystal Palace this season.

He scored twice at the weekend to earn the south London outfit a 3-2 victory at Burnley and continues to shine in the Premier League.

Gayle has found the net 10 times in 18 appearances in all competition, but didn’t earn his first break in league football until the summer of 2011 – when he signed for Daggers.
