Dagenham & Redbridge will have to wait at least another three weeks to see Rhys Murphy back in action with the striker set to go under the knife today.
Murphy topped the goalscoring charts with 13 for the club last season, but has been out since March after undergoing a hip operation.
The 23-year-old returned to light training recently as he stepped up his recovery, but the former Arsenal youngster has experienced some discomfort in his groin and was due to undergo the operation today.
And that’s a big blow to Daggers and boss Wayne Burnett, who also still has new signing Christian Doidge (foot) and Zavon Hines (knee) on the treatment table.
“He’s been feeling a little bit of pain across the top of his groin as he’s been making his recovery,” said Burnett.
“It’s frustrating when you have any player out injured, but one of Rhys’ ability is even more disappointing. But it’s a squad game and we’ll have to get on with it.”
Hines also had an exploratory operation to check on cartilage around his knee area, but his expected comeback of around November time has not been delayed as a result.
Doidge continues to struggle with the foot injury picked up in the warm up at Hartlepool United, but boss Burnett hopes he isn’t too far away from featuring for the first team.
“Christian’s injury is a badly bruised foot but it’s just a matter of waiting to see how quickly he can recover, but he won’t be ready for Saturday because he’s not quite up to scratch in terms of match fitness.”
