Jack Connors is hoping to retain his place in the Dagenham & Redbridge team this weekend as they visit Northampton Town, despite facing competition from recent new signing Joe Widdowson.

The 20-year-old has made 14 appearances this season, but more importantly started the last three matches and helped Daggers pick up three consecutive clean sheets.

Widdowson signed for Wayne Burnett’s team permanently last week, but wasn’t included in the squad that draw at Victoria Road with Oxford United.

However the former West Ham United youngster will expect to be involved this weekend against the Cobblers – his former club.

But Connors is hopeful of remaining in the team and is looking for Daggers to build on their current run of three games unbeaten.

He said “We need to build on these results and I think now we have a settled team at the moment it definitely helps.

“We need to have the same mentality when we go to Northampton and try to keep more clean sheets.

“We will be away from home so they will have to take the game to us and we will play depending on how they play.

“But the first thing we want is to keep a clean sheet and be competitive and see if we can nick a result.”

Connors is looking forward to battling with Widdowson for the left-back spot in Burnett’s team.

But now he has cemented a starting place in the side he isn’t about to let it go lightly, he added: “I would like to stay in the team, I want to play every game.

“Nathan Green has gone, but Joe has signed. He has got a lot of experience and he has played quite a few games in the league.

“It will be a good battle between me and him. I think he is 25 so he is not old and he has got a lot of experience, which is good.”
