Daggers reveal defender’s contract will not be renewed when it expires at end of June

Curtley Williams took to Twitter on Wednesday to post a heartfelt thank you to Dagenham & Redbridge after it was announced his contract would not be renewed.

Williams, along with, midfielders Frankie Raymond, Luke Guttridge and Leo Donnellan, and forwards Paul Benson, Shomari Barnwell and Jakub Berkowicz, will depart Daggers when their deals expire in the summer.

The 27-year-old right-back only made 11 appearances because of injury, but became a firm favourite with the fans, and took to social media to thank them after his departure was confirmed.

“Out of respect for all the supporters and fans I had at Dagenham, I just wanted to share my reasons for leaving,” he posted on Twitter.

“I was initially offered a short contract which I initially felt was not secure enough for me to accept, as I have a young family to provide for.

“I always felt at home at Dagenham and gave 110 per cent despite the obstacles I’ve faced, so the decision was made with a heavy heart.

“After discussing my concerns with my family and the gaffer (John Still), I then decided I was willing to take the risk to remain a Dagger, however it was too late.

“I do not feel my days at Dagenham are done yet, but I thank you for the memories and look forward to my next challenge.”

The defender arrived at Victoria Road on a one-year deal last summer from Luton Town and started the season as the Essex club’s first-choice right-back.

However, following the 3-1 win at Woking on August 20, Williams was sidelined with a knee injury until March 25, when he returned in the 1-0 win at home to York City.

In his 11 matches, Williams lost just twice and helped Daggers keep a clean sheet in five of his six home outings.

In addition to the outgoings, Daggers have also confirmed new contracts have been offered to defenders Luke Pennell, Sam Ling, Josh Staunton and Joe Widdowson.

Youth players Jordy Mongoy, a forward, and Liam Gordon, a left-back, have been offered professional terms, but Scott Mitchell has left after not being offered a professional deal.
