Forward scored twice as Daggers won 4-0 at Chester on Saturday for third league win in a row

Michael Cheek says it is vital Dagenham & Redbridge maintain their good form over the coming weeks after racking up a third National League win in succession on Saturday.

The former Braintree Town frontman scored twice as Daggers romped to a 4-0 win away to Chester in front of the BT Sport cameras.

Defender Sam Ling opened the scoring in the second half, with midfielder Luke Howell also on target, before Cheek’s brace rounded out the scoring for the Essex club.

The win took Daggers up to third and within two points of new league leaders Sutton United.

The Victoria Road outfit are now without a game until the trip to Barrow on December 9, with Cheek eager for the squad to keep their hot streak going.

“We need to crack on now, get a fourth win in a row and see how long this run can continue,” the 26-year-old told BT Sport.

Cheek’s double helped Daggers ultimately ease to success at Chester, but the Essex club struggled early on.

John Still’s men looked lethargic for much of the opening period, and were perhaps a touch fortunate to head into the break level.

During the interval, the BT Sport cameras picked up on Still’s team talk, which could be described as ‘animated’.

It had the desired effect, though, as in the second half, the title hopefuls looked a different side, taking the game to Marcus Bignot’s Blues.

It was a vastly improved display from Daggers in the second half, and Cheek was pleased with the team’s response to a poor opening period.

“It was a brilliant second half. The first half wasn’t up to scratch, but in the second half, we showed what we’re about,” he added.

“A lot of words were said at half time, but mainly we were told to work hard and that the goals would come.”

Daggers could have taken the lead before they eventually did in Cheshire, with Corey Whitely missing a penalty in the 55th minute.

Just two minutes later, Ling did fire the Essex side ahead, and Cheek believes it was key the team responded to the spot kick miss.

“We needed to react after the penalty, so it was good for us to get the goal soon after,” said the attacker.
